I’ve changed the settings on lab and departmental samba servers to set:
wide links = no
in the [global] section of smb.conf. I’d (naïvely?) assumed that was the default behavior, and it corresponds to what I think the intentions of most users are when sharing folders. See

This should get addressed in forthcoming samba updates for your favorite linux distro, and presumably in OS X updates, although it can take a while for Apple to address issues like this. The file to edit on OS X is /private/etc/smb.conf
