Community Service

This year, in an effort to expand our Community Service involvement, we have decided to collect items for The Second Step. “The Second Step was founded in 1992 by four women with the dream of creating a new kind of program for survivors of domestic violence. They had a vision of a transitional living program designed to give survivors more time, more services, more choices and in particular to find safe, long-term affordable housing and to gain economic self-reliance.” Unlike an emergency shelter, families are allowed to stay for up to two years while they recover from their experiences and find a way – with emotional and legal assistance – to begin a new, independent life. Based on their ‘wish list’, at the opening meeting we will be collecting toiletries and cleaning supplies – shampoo, conditioner, lotion, toothpaste, laundry detergent, deodorant, Windex, Fantastic, you name it. At the Book and Author Luncheon, we will be collecting school supplies and diapers (size 1 and above). Many of the women have left home with nothing, and would greatly benefit from your donations. There is an after school program that can use pencils, crayons, pens, scissors, markers and drawing paper, The Second Step has been locally and nationally recognized for the high quality of its programs and services. Please be generous and help these women and families in need.

If you would like to assist in the collection and delivery of these items, please contact Audree Dyson, 508-668-8122, akd216@gmail.com

For more than fifteen years the Boston Chapter has been partnering with the Jewish Coalition for Literacy by providing tutors at the J.P. Manning School in Jamaica Plain. This school includes pre-school through grade five and Brandeis supports the children by providing at least one tutor per grade who assists with reading and language skills. Tutoring does not require a teaching background but it does require at least a two hour weekly commitment to the teacher and to the child to whom you
are assigned. When you join this cadre of dedicated tutors we will do our best to honor your requested day and time at Manning. Helping a child learn to grow and develop is a most rewarding experience. To gather more information or to become a tutor please contact Judy Tye at j.tye@comcast.net
