Community Service

In 2015 Brandeis University was ranked #1 nationally by the Princeton Review for students involved in community service. Social justice, in the form of community service, has always been a core value of Brandeis University and one BNC Conejo Valley proudly emulates. Our members are involved in several service projects throughout the year in an effort to better the lives of individuals and society as a whole.

For further information about how to get involved or to arrange a donation pick-up please contact our Director of Community Service; Gertie Sanders at gertiesanders@gmail.com or 805-230-1252.

LA Family Housing

LA Family Housing assists homeless and at risk to become homeless people gain stable, long term housing. They are the first point of contact for families seeking housing assistance in the area. The organization offers a multi-faceted, personalized approach to housing in order to tackle the multiple causes of housing insecurity, while providing transitional or longer term affordable housing. They assist anyone from families facing homelessness for the first time who just need support until a change in employment status to people who have been chronically homeless for decades and need long-term, on-site services. The organization provides affordable housing, parenting classes, educational assistance for children, financial literacy support, mental and physical health support, transportation, food security, and toiletries and diapers.

BNC Conejo Valley helps how we can and donates toiletries and clothing.

Ronald McDonald House

The RMDH is an international charity that provides a place to stay for families that have had to travel for their child’s medical care. RMDH attempts to ease some stress of having a critically ill or injured child by enabling families to stay close by during treatment. Lodging is provided at little or no cost, running on the belief that a family shouldn’t have to worry about the price of hotel in relation to their child’s care. At the houses families can access meals, sleeping quarters, and play areas for children.

BNC Conejo Valley contributes by collecting soda can tabs which the organization can reconstitute and convert to cash. Though this may sound small, some RMDH chapters have raised $30,000 through tab collection alone.

For the Troops – Simi Valley

FtT is an organization that sends care packages to our Troops actively serving overseas. Packages contain small amenities many of us take for granted, but they may not have access to such as snacks, toothpaste, socks, magazines, Advil, eye drops, sunscreen, and hygiene products. BNC Conejo Valley collects toiletries and magazines to send along in the care packages. The “Day Time Divas” study group also volunteers their time to help build the packages.

Food Forward

Food Forward is a gleaning organization that collects surplus produce and food from private gardens, public orchards, farmer’s markets, and the like. All food they collect is food that would have gone to waste otherwise. The organization connects with food distribution charities who get the fresh fruit, vegetables, and bread those facing food insecurity. BNC Conejo Valley contributes by designating some of their produce for the organization.

BNC members knit individual squares which are then crocheted into quilts and distributed to local immobile senior citizens. If you would like to know more or get involved, please contact Ellie at norm0020@yahoo.com.

Book Collection –  The chapter collects books to donate to local charities or schools.

Holiday Toy Drive – During the holiday season, the chapter collects and donates toys to local Conejo Valley organizations and the Jewish Family Service, who run their own holiday drives.
