UNIVERSITY ON WHEELS (January 4 2016)

This year’s University on Wheels will feature Tom Doherty, Professor of American Studies, Brandeis University, who will present a talk on The Great American (Television) Novel.
Tom Doherty is a professor of American Studies and the program chair at Brandeis University, with specific expertise in American film and culture. He received his BA at Gonzaga University and both his MA and PhD at the University of Iowa.
Some of the courses Professor Doherty teaches at Brandeis include “Hollywood and American Culture,” “News on Screen,” and “American Graphic: Comics, Graphic Novels, and Graphic Nonfiction.”
He was named an Academy Film Scholar by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, is an associate editor for the film magazine Cineaste, and is a film review editor for the Journal of American History. He is also the author of “Cold War, Cool Medium: Television, McCarthyism, and American Culture,” “Projections of War: Hollywood, American Culture, and World War II,” and “Hollywood and Hitler, 1933-1939.”
Professor Doherty’s talk will focus on the influence of long running, quality television series.that seem to be supplanting both the novel and Hollywood cinema as the most rewarding popular art in American culture. By all accounts, we are in the midst of a glimmering Golden Age of American Television. In this session, Professor Doherty will examine the new genre of “arc TV”-series that follow long, complex arcs of development and that are, at their best, as exquisitely calibrated as the social matrix of a Henry James novel.
