The two love songs adhere to the formulaic conventional structure of the Bollywood melodramatic love story, where love is felt at first sight. In both films the characters Shahrukh Khan play, instantly fall for women that they should not pursue. Ram falls for a teacher in Main Noon Na and Om falls for a married woman in Om Shanti Om.
When Om sings the song Aankhon Mein Teri Ajab Si to Shanti, time seems to slow down while a faint wind blows against Shanti as she walks, and everything but her and Om’s singing is drowned out. Om’s facial expression as he sings suggests that what he feels for Shanti is a deep seated love. On the other hand, in Main Hoon Na, Ram serenading Chandni is humorous. Most of the action is purposely exaggerated for a comedic purpose, for example when Ram sings, his arms rise and he cannot keep them down even when he tries. There is a more intense wind blowing against Chandni than there is on Shanti. Whenever Ram sees Chandni he cannot control his actions, placing emphasis on the idea that love cannot be controlled.
I enjoy how the love song operates in the Bollywood film. If we really think about the idea of singing when in love, it isn’t out of the ordinary. For many, music is a popular form of expressing love, and the Bollywood love song places the human desire to sing when in love within the narrative of the film.
