City of Waltham: Energy Efficiency, Recycling, Hazardous Waste Management
Interns will gain insight in the workings of local government, while helping to develop and promote environmental protection programs and safe waste management practices in the City. Explore how local government works with committees, non-profits, state, and federal governments. Interns will assist with a wide range of operations and programs, conduct research, and write news articles for the Waltham News Tribune or produce other media. The Recycling Department oversees Recycling, Hazardous Waste Management, and Composting Management Programs. The Department also serves as the liaison to the Waltham Energy Action Committee (WEAC), a Mayoral Committee of environmental activists who advise the Mayor on issues of climate change, particularly the reduction of energy use and energy costs in the City. Interns will do research for WEAC projects, such as the Complete Streets initiative to make Waltham streets accessible for all uses, including biking and walking. Other projects include the development of an energy reduction social media campaign or compiling energy use data and builder contact information for the City’s Green Community Application. Harvard Hospitals: Environmental Health Safety & Emergency Management
Interns will help develop a lab chemical inventory and profile, providing a criticaltool for lab managers, researchers and others to understand and manage the potential hazards of lab chemicals on site. It will also help determine regulatory requirements, risk mitigation or substitution possibilities, etc. Qualified students will receive training as needed in in researching and interpreting important safety references, such as MSDSs, NFPA 704 hazard classification ratings, regulatory lists (including OSHA Select Carcinogens and DHS Chemicals of Interest), proper characterization of chemicals or chemical mixtures, identification of corresponding hazard categories, such as flammable, carcinogens, highly acutely toxic chemicals. Healthy Waltham: Interns assist this civic organization to promote healthy eating and connection with nature and address childhood obesity. Plant and dig with with children in school and community gardens, introduce new veggies into the school cafeterias with “veggie buddies”, blog and write articles for the Waltham Tribune and more. EPA Orise Fellow Announcement
From the organization, “The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is seeking applicants for a paid internship with the EPA Regional office in Boston. The announcement and selection process is being run through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). Please circulate this opportunity among your students. There is no deadline in the announcement, but EPA is looking for someone to start soon.
