This past Tuesday and Thursday, Judy Logback came to campus for two presentations on the Kallari Cocoa Bean Coop in Ecuador. Logback spoke of the major issues of the cocoa and chocolate industry and was direct about the devastating conditions that cocoa farmers live by as they are continually taken advantage of by chocolate monopolies. Logback talked of the inspiring work that is done at the Kallari Coop and accompanying these informative presentations were tantalizing chocolate tastings that had students and teachers smiling alike.

Tomorrow is Campus Sustainability Day! Look for stands and events happening around campus to raise awareness about living sustainably at college. It is also national Food Day, so join in on The Big Apple Crunch on the great lawn at 11:50am to support local food choices! BYOA (Bring your own apple!).

Thursday is the SEA coffeehouse! Drop into Chum’s between 9pm-12am, grab some coffee, organic goodies and get ready to be entertained!

Certified Green Room

Help improve campus sustainability! It just takes a few easy steps towards conservation to have a Certified Green Room. You may already be half-way there if you recycle or use compact florescent light bulbs. Take a minute to fill out this short-form and get your Certified Green Room sticker!

Recycling Bags

This year, every student gets a recycling bag for his or her room. These bags are encouraging students to bring recycling habits home. If you haven’t received yours yet, do not fret! Eco-Reps will be coming around to hand them out soon.

Phil Brown, who is a Brandeis SOC PhD, is directing a new interdisciplinary institute at Northeastern University: the Social Science Environmental Health Research Institute. university distinguished Pro­fessor of Soci­ology and Health Sci­ences with joint appoint­ments in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities and the Bouvé College of Health Sciences. Brown’s research included focusing on bio­mon­i­toring, which mea­sures the level of con­t­a­m­i­nants in the human body, and on house­hold expo­sure mon­i­toring, which mea­sures tox­i­cants found in the air and dust inside our homes and the air in our driveways.

The Social Sci­ence Envi­ron­mental Health Research Insti­tute will hold an offi­cial launch event on Oct. 29 in the Alumni Center from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. See Attached Flyer
