Update from The Hague

A quick note of “congratulations” to the Brandeis University student team who won the moot court competition at the Bilingual Summer School hosted by the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies in The Hague. 18 Brandeis students are in The Netherlands this summer as part of a new Brandeis study abroad program focusing on international justice, led by Prof. Richard Gaskins.

The winning Brandeis team debated a case involving incitement to genocide, war crimes, and responsibility of military commanders — all legal concepts that were learned for the first time on the program. Each team had prepared a written brief analyzing a hypothetical case, requiring them to sort these crimes out under the law of the International Criminal Court. Most impressively, the Brandeis students debated alongside professional lawyers, judges, and law students, and were evaluated by judges from the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia.

A full report from the moot court experience will be coming soon. For now, the students are anxiously awaiting the Netherlands’ World Cup Final on Sunday. You can also get a glimpse of the final classes in The Hague here.
