The ABCs of SEM

According to Internet Live Stats, Google currently processes over 3.5 billion searches per day, which amounts to 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide. Digital marketers know that web users arriving on Google’s search engine results page are looking for specific information based on the keywords they searched for. Search engine marketing (SEM) is a tactic marketers can use to get their products or services in front  of these users as searches are happening in real-time.

People looking at chartsThe idea behind SEM (also known as paid search, or pay-per-click marketing) is to anticipate the types of keywords a target market is going to search for, and strategically optimize a paid search budget to bid on those keywords. By also including the keywords in Google ads and on landing pages, marketers can earn one of Google’s top ad spots on the search engine results page, placing an ad among users who have already expressed an interest in searching for a product or service.

For professionals looking to build their search engine marketing skills, Brandeis GPS will be offering Principles of Search Engine Marketing during our October 2018 session. The fully online, 10-week course will explore ad creation, keyword expansion, landing page optimization, monitoring, bid management, and analysis. It will also explore search engine optimization, and how that strategy can enhance and complement paid search campaigns.

Students will learn the back-end technology behind search engines and how people use search engines to find information, and will then explore ways to position relevant content within those searches so that their products or services become part of the searcher’s decision process. Students learn about and evaluate SEM methods including content creation, keyword strategies, website programming, pay-per-click advertising, digital marketing optimization, and social media. As part of the course, students use Simbound, a digital marketing simulation, to create their own SEM campaign including forming objectives, strategy, budget allocation, tactics, and measurements to monitor progress.

At Brandeis GPS, you can take up to two courses before enrolling in one of our 12 Master’s degree programs. If you’re interested in exploring the MS in Digital Marketing and Design, or would like to explore paid search as part of your own professional development, contact the  GPS office for more information or to request a syllabus: 781-736-8787, gps@brandeis.edu, or submit your information.

The importance of customer analytics in marketing

Consumers today have so many options regardless of what product or service they’re looking for, and for marketers, it’s really important to use available data to better understand how to meet consumer needs and influence behavior. By understanding what consumers are really looking for, and how they behave when searching out products or services, marketers can work on targeting the right audiences in the ways that will really appeal to them. By tracking behavior and predicting how consumers conduct their searches, marketing firms are able to narrow down exactly how to target the right customer, so that the supplier benefits in finding a customer, and the customer benefits as they are able to find exactly what they are looking for. In analyzing data and identifying consumer trends, marketers are able to build models that will help launch marketing plans that reflect changes and consistencies in consumer behavior, to help plan for future marketing initiatives.

For those interested in this fast-paced industry, Brandeis GPS is offering a course for the spring 2017 term in Marketing and Customer Analytics. The course will provide an introduction to advanced analytics and measurement in the areas of social networking and media, web and marketing analytics. The topics covered include the history, tracking, performance, optimization, metrics, analysis, visualization, decision making, reporting and best practices in each of those three areas. E-commerce will also be covered as it relates to web and marketing.

Those interested in the course who do not yet wish to pursue a full master’s degree can still participate. At Brandeis GPS, you can take up to two online courses without officially enrolling in a program. This is a great opportunity to get to know our programs and approach to online learning. How psychology can change user behavior

In a world where websites and digital ad networks serve us nearly one million marketing messages each year, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to capture the attention of web users going about their daily business. As content consumers, we tend to be task-oriented and ignore the things around us. “Banner blindness” occurs when users automatically ignore the ad-heavy right side of web pages.

As most of us tend to skim web content quickly, bulleted lists and short paragraphs to break up text are considerably effective at keeping users engaged. When it comes to online marketing, understanding the psychology behind web user activity is crucial to successfully promoting a product or running a business.

These topics are furthered explored in Brandeis University’s Cognitive and Social Psychology of User-Centered Design spring 2017 course. As part of the MS in User-Centered Design  graduate program, this part-time, fully online course will examine the psychological and social aspects that impact human interface interaction in both physical and virtual environments. Topics will include:

  • Signal Detection Theory, Gestalt Theory, Cognitive Load Theory and various motivational theories
  • The cultural and social implications of design
  • Cognitive and social psychology principles that will impact the use of a particular design

By the end of the course, students will be able to make reasonable predictions of human behavior with regards to a user interface and/or design and offer design solutions that will ensure effective user experience based on these principles.

Those interested in the course who do not yet wish to pursue a full master’s degree can still participate. At Brandeis GPS, you can take up to two online courses without officially enrolling in a program. This is a great opportunity to get to know our programs and approach to online learning. Brandeis University to add two online master’s degrees this fall

Programs to address critical need for skilled professionals in expanding digital marketing and design industries

WALTHAM, MA – Brandeis University’s Graduate Professional Studies division (GPS) announced today the launch of two new fully online, part-time master’s degrees: a Master of Science in Digital Marketing and Design and a Master of Science in User-Centered Design.

The programs’ curricula incorporate the rigorous standards of excellence that make Brandeis one of the country’s top universities while capturing the latest applied technologies and industry best practices. Both 30-credit programs are designed so students can complete them in 1.6 to 3 years.

The M.S. in Digital Marketing and Design distinguishes itself from other degrees — particularly traditional marketing degrees — in how it blends together principles of digital marketing design, tactics dmd-heroand analysis. The program concentrates on the technical application of marketing theory in digital environments, equipping students with a rich toolkit for delivering sound, tailored digital marketing campaigns.

“Today’s businesses rely heavily on websites, blogs, social media and other digital content that are created and controlled by the organization,” said Steven Dupree, VP of Marketing at SoFi and the program’s chair. “Students will learn to leverage these assets, implement a sound media strategy, and analyze digital marketing data to make smart decisions that grow companies.”

The M.S. in User-Centered Design is geared toward professionals with backgrounds in human computer interaction, information technology, computer science, digital marketing, or interaction design. The program focuses on the psychological and other human factors that affect the usability of systems and should influence interface design strategies. Students learn processes for extracting user needs and requirements; developing concepts with wireframes/prototypes; and learning methods to refine and validate their designs through an iterative process.  Upon program completion, students will have developed a portfolio of artifacts that apply innovative thinking and a human-centered approach to web, applications or software enterprise system design.

UCD“Design-thinking coupled with leadership skills are the magic bullet that technology companies need to successfully innovate and produce world-class products and services,” said Blade Kotelly, VP of Design at Jibo and a member of the degree program’s professional advisory board. “This program strikes the ideal balance between theory and practice.”

In addition to the new programs, Brandeis GPS offers a post-master’s graduate certificate in Learning Analytics and eight fully online part-time master’s degrees applicable to an array of industries. All Brandeis GPS programs are asynchronous, providing students with a flexible and convenient approach to completing their degrees.

Students interested in applying for either program should complete their applications by Aug. 11, 2015. Students also have the opportunity to take courses prior to applying for admission. Registration for the fall 2015 term opens on August 25, with courses beginning Sept. 16. For more information, please visit www.brandeis.edu/gps.
