I’m interested in the concept of emergence: How complex functions arise from the interactions of many comparatively simple parts. For instance, ant colonies are able to solve difficult problems in their environment even though no one ant knows the solution. Similarly, nervous systems create complex behaviors based on interactions between neurons. I study how robust and reliable motor patterns emerge from a small group of neurons, the STG of crustaceans, and how these interactions underly basic principles of nervous systems and other emergent networks.
