2016 MRSEC Summer Course Announcement

Registration for our annual, one-week summer course, “Introduction to Microfluidics Technology” at Brandeis University, near Boston, MA, is now open. The application deadline is March 31, 2016.

Introduction to Microfluidics Technology is a hands-on laboratory course sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Bioinspired Soft Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Brandeis. It will be offered during the week of June 13 ‐ 17, 2016. The course is intended for graduate students, post docs, faculty, and industrial scientists/engineers interested in utilizing microfluidic technology in their work, both in the physical and life sciences. The course does not assume any specific prerequisites.

will be taught by Dr. Nathan Tompkins.

The $750 fee covers course tuition, housing in double-occupancy rooms, and breakfast/lunch/coffee from Monday through Friday. Single rooms are not available. Local students who do not need housing will pay a non-resident fee of $500 (cash and check only please).

The annual one-week course offered during the summer of 2015 is “Introduction to Microfluidics Technology” (June 22 – 26). It will be held at Brandeis University and sponsored by the National Science Foundation’s Bioinspired Soft Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC) at Brandeis. As a part of our innovative interface, students can use our virtual speech assistant to navigate and browse our site. Our website has been created to be used on chrome browsers across all platforms using responsive web design and speech recognition native to the chrome browser.

Jeeves is a voice-powered personal assistant designed to help optimize your time by allowing you to listen to the news, email, or weather through a conversational dialogue. MRSEC Summer Courses 2012

The Brandeis Materials Research Science and Engineering Center announces two new one week summer 2012 courses:

  • Introduction to Microfluidics Technology (June 18-22, 2012)
  • Modern Optical Microscopy  (June 25-29, 2012)

Introduction to Microfluidics Technology will be taught by the director of the Brandeis Microfluidics Center. The course is based on strategies employed when teaching new users of the facility how to utilize microfluidic technology in research work.

Modern Optical Microscopy will be taught by Professor Zvonimir Dogic of the Physics department at Brandeis. It is based on a very successful one semester graduate course offered at Brandeis on the same topic. (see a review of this course from last year).

Summer science classes at Brandeis

Enrollment for Summer School 2011 at Brandeis is open now (Session I starts on May 31). A number of science classes are being taught, from General Chemistry to Molecular Biotechnology. There is more information at the new Summer School Blog, including a story about Justin Dore, who is teaching a couple of the courses.

MRSEC summer course in Optical Microscopy (June 20-24, 2011)

Optical microscopy has become a powerful experimental tool capable of simultaneously visualizing large scale structures such as entire cells, and fluorescently labeled single molecules within these complex structures. It has found important applications in diverse scientific fields.  The Brandeis Materials Science Research and Enginering Center will offer a one-week intense summer course in optical microscopy from June 20 – June 24, 2011, “Introduction to Optical Microscopy.“  The primary goal of the course is to train students in the fundamentals of microscopy and optics. The students will start by constructing a bright field and fluorescence microscope from simple optical components before learning how to use research grade optical microscopes. After completing the course, students will acquire knowledge necessary for using optical microscopes at limits of their capabilities and critically evaluating their performance.

This summer course is a condensed version of a popular graduate level course in  Quantitative Biology (Quantitative Biology Instrumentation Laboratory QB 120 b).  Our goal is to make this course accessible to students with all scientific backgrounds.  The course will be taught by Zvonimir Dogic, who is a faculty member in the Physics Department at Brandeis University.
