But who is Mykki Blanco?
It is difficult to put Mykki Blanco in one box. She’s the “art world’s post-Generation X pomo baby” born from the mind of Michael Quattlebaum, Jr.
Michael is a “one-person spectacle who can morph from a young, gay, black urbanite reciting lines about discrimination to a cross-dressing firecracker named Mykki Blanco.” However, as The Guardian warns, to just understand Blanco as a gay rapper who dresses flamboyantly, misses the point. Mykki Blanco is Michael Quattlebaum, Jr. and Michael Quattlebaum, Jr. is Mykki Blanco. They are one in the same and embody both female and male spirits.
Mykki Blanco has a riveting presence for whom threat and fabulousness form one cohesive whole. One moment she’s vogue-ing at the spotlight, the next she’s channelling a zombie menace, like Nicki Minaj fronting a 21st-century version of horror-rap act the Gravediggaz’.
Blanco is “the all-encompassing metropolitan artiste.” (Interview) and being a performer is just one of the many hats Blanco wears. She is also an author of a book of poetry sold at Opening Ceremony and LA’s OHWOW Gallery.
So a picture starts to emerge: Blanco is a great performer with an aggressive and impressive flow, sharp fashion sense and a rare blend of confidence and humility. She is not here to promote a movement, nor question people’s perception of what is and isn’t suitable in rap, she just happens to do so.
Ultimately, is there one, concise answer to the question: Who is Mykki Blanco?
