Interview Ideas

Story Pitches for Week 2

Story Idea One:

The Rose Art Museum Opening. The Rose will debut it’s Fall 2016 collection on September 10th. I want to interview either the Curator, Kim Contay, or the Acting Director, Kristin Parker. I want to ask them about what goes on behind the scenes in making an exhibition happen. Who are the artists? How you find them? How do you put together an exhibition that people will be interested in? What is the subject matter? When do you start the planning process? Physically, what does the Rose do to adapt to what each artist’s vision is? How do we get more students to go to the museum? The Rose is an amazing place that very few students take advantage of even though it’s free and right on campus. There is some amazing art there. I want to take photos of either Kim or Kristin inside the museum explaining everything to me (this can happen after the actual event given the time frame of this class) and then I want to attend the event and take photos of them in action to put together into one piece.

Story Idea Two:

The Brandeis Librarians. Right now the Brandeis library is under construction. But what goes on behind the scenes? What do librarians do all day? How does the preservation process work? What kind of resources and materials does Brandeis own? Where are they all kept? I want to interview either Leslie Reicher, the Preservations Officer, or Maggie McNeely, the University Archivist. I think it would be interesting to get their perspective on old documents and the importance of primary sources.

Audrey Fein: Aspiring Journalist

My name is Audrey Fein and I want to write for a living. Crazy idea in the world we live in today, right? Oh well. Writing is my favorite thing to do. I write for inspiration, for fun, for clarity, growth, and to remain grounded. I am taking this class to build on my skills as a storyteller and keen observer of the world.

In my spare time, I write for the Arts section of The Justice. I write about one article every week about arts events happening on and off campus. My favorite stories to cover are music. Listening to music, especially live music, stirs something in my soul that I just can’t seem to find in any other area of my life. When writing and music intersect, I am very happy!

One thing a lot of people on campus don’t know is that Brandeis has it’s own student-run record company called Basement Records. Last year some of the artists put on a show in Chums. I am interested in finding out more about the record company and who the people behind it are. That would be a cool interview. I also want to cover the fall concert (learn how to shoot video in the dark, etc) and other music events happening on campus.

Outside of the Brandeis bubble, I am interested in space exploration. The discovery of Proxima B fascinates me. I don’t know how I could capture space in this class though. On a more realistic note, I think that local politics are often overlooked even though they are the backbone of our government. I want to learn more about the government agencies in Waltham, how they operate, and how they affect us at Brandeis. There has been a lot of budget cuts in the Waltham school district and I am interested in covering how that will affect the people who live here.
