Special Brandeis Tour

Tuesday, July 28, 2015: Join Brandeis members and guests for a one hour tour at 1 PM of the Welles-Shipman-Ward House in South Glastonbury. Arrive by 12:50 PM for a Docent-led tour of an historic 18th century Connecticut “mansion house” in built in 1753 as a wedding gift to John Welles, a merchant and owner of a Connecticut River shipyard, by his father Colonel Thomas Welles. The house contains many period furnishings and is bordered by a kitchen herb and flower garden. Learn about the fortunes and financial failures of three early Connecticut families who owned the home. The tour will include information about the responsibilities, day-to-day lives, and property rights of Colonial women.

There are steep interior steps to the second floor of this historic house at

972 Main Street, South Glastonbury. Limited to 15.
