Insights into the growth of the master’s degree

How niche, industry specific programs are shaping the future of the graduate education market

According to the Education Advisory Board’s Academic Affairs Forum, more students are enrolling in master’s degrees than any other level. In fact, experts predict that master’s degrees will comprise nearly 30 percent of all awarded degrees by the year 2022.

Where is this growth coming from?

One factor fueling EAB’s dramatic prediction is an increase in the development of specialized programs in core professional fields, such as non-MBA business degrees (i.e. marketing and communications) or master’s of laws (LLM) programs.

The expanding popularity of graduate programs that cater to niche, rapidly changing industries is also contributing to the growth of the master’s degree. EAB’s study predicts increasing market demand for programs designed to bolster careers in cybersecurity, data analytics and health informatics.

Niche programs currently on the market

Brandeis University’s division of Graduate Professional Studies has been offering innovative, online graduate programs for more than a decade. Designed specifically for students who are working full-time, GPS’s part-time, online programs are led by experts in the field and offer exclusive insights into some of today’s most dynamic industries.

Innovations in digital marketing at SXSW 2016

Each March, more than 70,000 representatives from the music, film and tech industries descend upon Austin, Texas, for SXSW. Considered one of the world’s top tech conferences (yes, this is the one credited with generating Twitter’s success), the two-week festival is dedicated to exploring the latest trends and strategies in the digital media space.SXSW’s famed interactive conference includes hundreds of events each day and features speakers from established technology leaders and emerging companies alike. I had the opportunity to attend SXSW Interactive in 2015, but I found this year’s experience even more valuable — both from a professional perspective as the senior director of marketing for the Texas Stars, but also for my role as an instructor with Brandeis GPS’s Digital Marketing and Design graduate program. I currently teach Writing for Digital Environments, and the panels that I attended related directly to several course topics: audience targeting, storytelling techniques, social media strategies and user-generated content.

Marketing to moments: a new outreach strategy

One particularly insightful panel I attended, Marketing to Moments that Matter, featured Ann Mack, head of content and activation for global consumer insights at Facebook. Mack talked about how marketing strategies have moved beyond targeting by demographics and even by passions and interests. Today, with the ubiquitous nature of mobile in our lives, marketers need to focus on the particular moments that people experience on a daily basis. Mack shared some compelling statistics about the millions of moments shared through mobile devices any given minute, and designated those moments into three categories for strategic outreach:

  • Landmark moments (marriage, children, college graduations)
  • Annual moments (holidays and birthdays)
  • Everyday moments (cooking, losing a phone)

Mack’s takeaways for the audience resonated with the digital media writing strategies we had covered in class: be personal in your messaging, be precise in your targeting, and be persistent with your strategy.

Sports fashion, Grumpy Cat, and great writing’s place in a visual world 

Not only did the topics covered at SXSW directly relate to my digital writing course, but the course seemed to follow me to the conference. Each week in our discussion forums, students choose organizations to analyze based on that week’s topics, and I was excited to run into two companies that students had studied during my SXSW experience. Less than a week after a student had critiqued a marketing email from Fanatics.com, I sat in on a panel with their vice president of marketing, Ryan Donovan. After listening to him speak about their marketing strategies and challenges, I was able to relay that information back to the class as a follow up to our discussion forum.
SXSW1-catconcoctions-e1458308732542Another student had analyzed Friskies’ digital media presence, and when I saw that Grumpy Cat was making a SXSW appearance on behalf of the cat food brand, I waited in more than an hour-long line (all for the benefit of the class, I swear!) to get my photo taken with Internet-famous cat and experience their #CatConcoctions digital campaign first hand. I’ll be using this campaign as a case study during our user-generated content week to demonstrate ways that brands can encourage consumers to post content on their behalf.

The biggest benefit to attending SXSW Interactive is having the ability to get a pulse on the digital media trends that other companies are focusing on. Even as digital media moves toward focusing more on the visual through photos and videos, I heard the words “storytelling” and “authenticity” in multiple panels this year. To me, this emphasizes the fact that organizations still need great writers and creative thinkers on their digital teams.

My time at SXSW 2016 was a definite success, and I am so excited to be able to share what I learned with my GPS class and immediately implement those ideas into my teaching. While I’m constantly reading about the latest developments in digital media, there’s nothing quite like being able to sit in a room with the experts, hear them talk, and ask them questions about issues I am tackling both in the workplace and in the classroom.

Back in September, IBM announced a way to adopt Cloud Security for better and more secure navigation among users. In this Cloud Security course, you’ll learn about how this and other technologies and security concepts are necessary for meeting the demands of the ever-growing cloud computing industry.

#3 Writing for Digital Environments

Companies are always seeking ways to be better, faster and stronger to gain an edge over their competition. With developing technologies and growing staff, it’s important to have the skills needed to excel in a digital world. According to the Huffington Post, “by 2018, the U.S is expected to have around 1.5 million managers and analysts who lack sufficient technical and digital skills to stay up to date.”  Writing for Digital Environments is a great course for learning how to excel in the art of content marketing for a digital audience. You’ll also learn to craft copy and messaging for a variety of online formats.

#4 Cognitive and Social Psychology of User-Centered Design

We all use websites every day,  whether it’s ordering something from a retailer or doing research for an employer. Providing a great user experience online can make or break any business transaction. According to Tech Crunch, “it is the person who designs the environment in which we live in who has the most influence on our decisions.” In this Cognitive and Social Psychology of User-Centered Design course, you will gain a deeper understanding of the social and psychological aspects that influence how users respond to design.

Brandeis University to add two online master’s degrees this fall

Programs to address critical need for skilled professionals in expanding digital marketing and design industries

WALTHAM, MA – Brandeis University’s Graduate Professional Studies division (GPS) announced today the launch of two new fully online, part-time master’s degrees: a Master of Science in Digital Marketing and Design and a Master of Science in User-Centered Design.

The programs’ curricula incorporate the rigorous standards of excellence that make Brandeis one of the country’s top universities while capturing the latest applied technologies and industry best practices. Both 30-credit programs are designed so students can complete them in 1.6 to 3 years.

The M.S. in Digital Marketing and Design distinguishes itself from other degrees — particularly traditional marketing degrees — in how it blends together principles of digital marketing design, tactics dmd-heroand analysis. The program concentrates on the technical application of marketing theory in digital environments, equipping students with a rich toolkit for delivering sound, tailored digital marketing campaigns.

“Today’s businesses rely heavily on websites, blogs, social media and other digital content that are created and controlled by the organization,” said Steven Dupree, VP of Marketing at SoFi and the program’s chair. “Students will learn to leverage these assets, implement a sound media strategy, and analyze digital marketing data to make smart decisions that grow companies.”

The M.S. in User-Centered Design is geared toward professionals with backgrounds in human computer interaction, information technology, computer science, digital marketing, or interaction design. The program focuses on the psychological and other human factors that affect the usability of systems and should influence interface design strategies. Students learn processes for extracting user needs and requirements; developing concepts with wireframes/prototypes; and learning methods to refine and validate their designs through an iterative process.  Upon program completion, students will have developed a portfolio of artifacts that apply innovative thinking and a human-centered approach to web, applications or software enterprise system design.

UCD“Design-thinking coupled with leadership skills are the magic bullet that technology companies need to successfully innovate and produce world-class products and services,” said Blade Kotelly, VP of Design at Jibo and a member of the degree program’s professional advisory board. “This program strikes the ideal balance between theory and practice.”

In addition to the new programs, Brandeis GPS offers a post-master’s graduate certificate in Learning Analytics and eight fully online part-time master’s degrees applicable to an array of industries. All Brandeis GPS programs are asynchronous, providing students with a flexible and convenient approach to completing their degrees.

Students interested in applying for either program should complete their applications by Aug. 11, 2015. Students also have the opportunity to take courses prior to applying for admission.
