Why did you choose Brandeis GPS?

Brandeis is known for having good business management programs. Also Brandeis GPS has a really good reputation on providing industry-recognized part-time online degree programs. 

What inspired you to choose your field of study?

I wanted to pursue this field of study to better understand high-level thinking at my job. This helps me to perform better at my job. Learning management knowledge will help me to better understand technology from a higher perspective and provide a clear view of my career path.  

What are your hopes and aspirations for the rest of your time at Brandeis? 

I would like to use my remaining time to get connected with instructors and my classmates. I would like to expand my professional network.

What are your plans for after graduation?

I am planning on seeking more opportunities for me within my organization. Also I will start exploring other opportunities in higher-education and other industries.

What advice would you give to incoming students?

Be patient when reading classmates’ posts. Be thoughtful and humble when replying to people’s ideas. Be proactive when learning from instructors and others.

What has been your favorite class to-date?

RMGT 110, RMGT 160, and RMGT 103.

Brandeis announces commitment to open source movement

Brandeis University and Open Source Initiative to launch new educational partnership
Resources designed to fill key skills gaps as open source industry matures.

PORTLAND, OR – Brandeis Graduate Professional Studies (GPS) will partner with The Open Source Initiative® (OSI) to provide new educational offerings for the open source community, the university announced at OSCON 2019. 

As more companies start leveraging Open Source Software to reduce costs, decrease time to deployment and foster innovation, the organizations that have realized success as open source consumers are now extending their participation within open source communities as collaborators and contributors. This shift can create new challenges to traditional business processes and models, requiring dedicated policies, programs and personnel to ensure that the investments in open source projects produce the desired benefits while still aligning with the values of the open source communities. The Brandeis GPS-OSI partnership will help address the growing demand for expertise within organizations seeking to authentically collaborate with, and productively manage, open source resources. 

“Understanding how to assess, engage, and contribute to open source communities while also delivering value to your company is the next generation skill set employers are looking for,” said Patrick Masson, general manager of the Open Source Initiative. “We’re thrilled to work with Brandeis to help continue the incredible growth of open source software and projects.”

True to open source software process and principles, the educational offerings coming out of the partnership will be crowd-sourced and jointly developed by an advisory board comprised of university curriculum development experts and senior open source advocates from Amazon, Red Hat, Bloomberg, Twitter and other leading companies. 

“Brandeis GPS is known for developing programs that keep a finger on the pulse of what’s happening in technology,” said Dr. James La Creta, the university’s chief information officer and chair of the Master of Science in Technology Management program. “Much like the other graduate programs at Brandeis GPS, open source technology’s flexibility, speed, and cost-effectiveness makes it extremely desirable for organizations. It yields a better quality product, creates a culture of collaboration, and attracts curious and innovative talent that all CIO’s covet.”

How to be a successful leader

Word Cloud of RMGT descriptionThere are many factors that determine the success of an organizational leader, from personal attributes such as leadership style and emotional intelligence to communication, decision making, and conflict resolution skills. Then you have external factors, including organizational structure and the influence of corporate culture. Regardless of external influences, successful leaders have a strong moral code, are able to motivate a team, and can provide effective feedback when necessary.

Brandeis GPS will be offering Organizational Leadership and Decision Making during our Fall 2 session, starting in October. The fully online, 10-week course will focus on leadership as a process by which one person influences the attitudes and behaviors of others. Topics covered include various leadership theories and models, differences across cultures, ethics and attributes, organizational change and development, and the role of the leader in establishing organizational culture and facilitating change. Students will deepen their understanding of these concepts through group projects and leadership simulations.

At the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Gain insight into their own strengths and weaknesses as a leader and create a plan for continued introspection and improvement
  • Describe the nature of leadership and assess the basic functions of management and the complexities of leadership
  • Analyze the role of moral reasoning and ethics in organizational and team decisions
  • Examine multiple viewpoints for differing frames of reference, perspectives, and orientations to the same situation
  • Employ leadership, team-building and decision-making concepts; examine how teams make high-stakes decisions in stressful situations, why individuals and teams make flawed choices and how leaders shape the context and the process through which teams make decisions
  • Critically reflect on leadership style and their own experience within a team and its leadership
  • Understand the role of leaders in setting strategic focus and direction

Finding the confidence to go from innovator to entrepreneur

I’ve always felt a desire to be at the forefront of change. As the first in my family to graduate from college, I soon realized my ambitions as an innovator. My undergraduate degree in marketing, but a knack for finance and love for technology set me on a road less traveled and made my journey into entrepreneurship clear.

Pursuing a master’s degree in Information Technology Management through Brandeis University Graduate Professional Studies gave me the confidence to begin development on my own venture. The online classroom format allowed me the flexibility to learn even with my busy schedule. The content is relevant and applicable to real world project scenarios, and when it came time to share my own knowledge with my classmates, I found that the unique online classroom forums fostered collaboration so well that I was able to both gain an understanding of course content while drawing business experience from the global student cohort.

Readiness + Opportunity = Success

As many entrepreneurs recognize, when you enlist in the responsibility of developing a new venture, the once luxurious downtime hours you used to take advantage of quickly become a dwindling resource. You find yourself constantly on the move while simultaneously doing a million different tasks at once.

The accessibility and flexibility of the online courses at GPS allowed me to find that proper balance between learning and working. I could spend most of my mornings catching up on the required weekly readings, assignments, and postings, while in the evening; I can focus my efforts on my work.

Much of the time, I found what I was learning fit nicely into helping develop my venture. The relevant and business focused content is another strong point of the IT management program. The blend of strategic information technology and soft-skill focused courses empowers students with critical skills by focusing much of their curriculum on developing preparedness, leadership, and communication abilities. In one course, a student could be learning to negotiate effectively through role-playing with classmates online, while in another, they could be managing a small team of professionals in dissecting a business via case studies.

The amalgam of information technology and business knowledge is of exceptional value for students, especially those like me, who are working to start their own businesses in the tech industry.

The true essence of this program, however, is the experience sharing found within the classroom forums. The moderate classroom sizes seem to always be with a cohort of students from various geographical locations, all with a rich history of experience. Having the ability to engage with these classmates can be initially difficult as writing a post back and forth online feels foreign to most that are used to the traditional physical classroom setting. Much of (if not all) the communications that I do in regards to my venture is virtual. My venture’s advisory board members are in various locations around the world, therefore most of deliverable comprehension and directives must be executed over email. What these forums allow a student to do is practice communicating and sharing their passion and knowledge across a virtual platform in order to generate value-driven conversations.

All in all, I feel a sense of pride as I take a step back and examine how the IT Management program has prepared me to start my own business. The flexible course structures, the relatable material, and the dynamic classroom environment merge together to fashion a transformative learning experience, one that gives any young innovator the confidence to become a successful entrepreneur.

Position: Data Scientist

Position Details:

  • Prepare data visualizations and analysis reports for board meeting, investor presentations and team progress meetings
  • Format and analyze data to extract key performance parameters
  • Perform statistical analysis on study results
  • Update and maintain preclinical studies database/find new ways to improve upon current system

Requirements:

  • Bachelors Degree in life and/or physical science or quantitative major (courses in statistics a plus)
  • At least 1-3 years experience, post graduation, in an industry setting as a data analyst
  • At least 3 distinct, observable examples where achieved meaningful excellence
  • Proficiency in Microsoft excel, Powerpoint (advanced functions, pivot tables, VB macros, charting visuals) and willingness to expand range of skills
  • Knowledge or experience with any statistical software language (R, Matlab, SAS, Minitab, Sigmaplot, Prism, etc.) is a big plus or willingness to learn
  • Ability to work in a remote office setting at times and be able to communicate with various professionals in the drug development field
