HIST 187b: Unequal Histories: Caste, Religion and Dissent in India Tuesday/Thursday 4pm-5:30pm EST
In 2019, Brandeis became the first American university to expressly prohibit caste bias by including caste in its non-discrimination policy.
This course taught by Professor Avinash Singh explores connections between race and caste by comparing similar systems in America and Nazi Germany. It examines the religions, political, and social dimensions of caste, marginalized voices and an alternative discourse of dissent and social justice.

Another relatively new course to consider enrolling in this Fall is Professor Elanah Uretsky’s IGS 136b – Contemporary Chinese Society and Culture.
This course introduces students to contemporary Chinese society, with a focus on the rapid transformations that have taken place during the post-Mao era with a focus on family, gender, sexuality, migration, ethnicity, and family planning.
