Massachusetts

Massachusetts General Hospital – Boston, MA

Dr. Liliana Bordeianou is the Chief, Colorectal Surgery Program at Mass General. Lieba Savitt is a Nurse Practitioner and Patient Access Coordinator for the Colorectal Surgery Center/ Pelvic Floor Disorders Service at Mass General. This site will provide a research based experience and may have opportunity for clinical exposure including shadowing during surgeries. Applicants to this site must commit to continuing the research during the academic year. Pre-Health Advising will select finalists for this site, and MGH will make the final acceptance decision.
Dr. Milena Weinstein is the Director of Research of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (FPMRS) and Co-Director of the Center for Pelvic Floor Disorders. FPMRS is a surgical subspecialty within Gynecology that deals with the prevention and treatment of pelvic floor disorders, including incontinence and prolapse. The FPMRS Department at MGH is looking for a student to populate a new database for our perineal patients. These patients are those who have had extensive lacerations after vaginal deliveries or complications of their vaginal repairs. We are hoping that by establishing this database that we will ultimately be able to improve the management and outcomes of this population. The creation of this database will involving data-mining through the EPIC and REDCap systems. No prior experience is required. This work could potentially result in publication(s) for the student involved. In addition to this opportunity for clinical research, this site will also offer shadowing in the operating room and/or in the clinic, depending on the interests of the student.
Dr. Kaitlyn Edelson is a Maternal Fetal Medicine Fellow at Massachusetts General Hospital. This site will provide a research based experience working as an intern in the Maternal Fetal Medicine department. The intern will be working on a variety of projects including: a systematic literature review of the global health publications in obstetrics, a web-based survey of women’s attitudes toward medication use in pregnancy, and a web-based survey of Ob/Gyn’s knowledge of obstructive sleep apnea (OSAKA questionnaire).
Dr. Madhusmita Misra is the Division Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at Mass General and the Fritz Bradley Talbot and Nathan Bill Talbot Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. This site will provide a research based experience working as an intern in the MGH Adolescent Neuroendocrine Unit. The intern will be working on a NIH funded research study exploring the effects of weight loss surgery on bone health in 13-21 year olds. The student selected for this opportunity will work with the study coordinator to prepare for study visits, grade study instruments, manage study data, and work on recruitment projects. The position will provide opportunities to shadow with study doctors at the MGH Weight Center as well as opportunities to be part of publications of abstracts and papers. Applicants must commit to working a minimum of 10 hours per week during the academic year and then a 40 hour per week internship over the following summer.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center – Boston, MA

Dr. Cataldo is Instructor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School and on staff in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This site will provide opportunities for research participation as well as clinical observation. Students applying for this location should be proactive in their learning with some general ideas about where they would like to go in healthcare. This work environment is fast-paced. We will engage a student in all aspects of the patient care team, across multiple specialties.

New York

Stony Brook University Medical Hospital – Stony Brook, NY

Dr. Paula Denoya is Director of Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency and Associate Professor of Surgery at Stony Brook University Medical Hospital. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. You may have the opportunity to observe patient-physician interactions and could also be able to shadow during surgeries.
Dr. Samer Sbayi is Director of Exigent Emergency General Surgery Service and Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at Stony Brook University Medical Hospital. (He is also a Brandeis alum!) This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. You may have the opportunity to observe patient-physician interactions and could also be able to shadow during surgeries.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center – Queens, NY

Dr. Marc Sher is a colon/rectal surgeon and Associate Chairman of Surgery-Division of Colorectal Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is also the former president of the New York Surgical Society. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. Things you may observe include a variety of surgeries. Additionally, you could have the opportunity to observe the doctor-patient interactions during pre-op and post-op appointments and see new patient appointments.

Pennsylvania

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital – Philadelphia, PA

Dr. Gerald Isenberg is the Program Director for the Colorectal Surgery Residency and Professor of Surgery. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. You may spend time in the surgical clinic where you can join Dr. Isenberg when he meets with patients and performs patient examinations. You may also have the opportunity to go into the operating room and/or shadow other partners.
