Massachusetts

Massachusetts General Hospital – Boston, MA

Dr. Liliana Bordeianou is the Chief, Colorectal Surgery Program at Mass General. Lieba Savitt is a Nurse Practitioner and Patient Access Coordinator for the Colorectal Surgery Center/ Pelvic Floor Disorders Service at Mass General. This site will provide a research based experience and may have opportunity for clinical exposure including shadowing during surgeries. Applicants to this site must commit to continuing the research during the academic year. Pre-Health Advising will select finalists for this site, and MGH will make the final acceptance decision.
Dr. Madhusmita Misra is the Division Chief of Pediatric Endocrinology at Mass General and the Fritz Bradley Talbot and Nathan Bill Talbot Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. This site will provide a research based experience working as an intern in the MGH Adolescent Neuroendocrine Unit. The intern will be working on a NIH funded research study exploring the effects of weight loss surgery on bone health in 13-21 year olds. The student selected for this opportunity will work with the study coordinator to prepare for study visits, grade study instruments, manage study data, and work on recruitment projects. The position will provide opportunities to shadow with study doctors at the MGH Weight Center as well as opportunities to be part of publications of abstracts and papers. Applicants must commit to working a minimum of 10 hours per week during the academic year and then a 40 hour per week internship over the following summer.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center – Boston, MA

Dr. Cataldo is Assistant Professor in Surgery at Harvard Medical School and on staff in the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. This site will provide opportunities for  clinical observation. Students applying for this location should be proactive in their learning with some general ideas about where they would like to go in healthcare. This work environment is fast-paced. We will engage a student in all aspects of the patient care team, across multiple specialties.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital – Boston, MA

The Partners HealthCare Biobank is a large research program designed to help researchers understand how people’s health is affected by their genes, lifestyle, and environment. Summer interns work independently and on a team and report to the project manager. Interns recruit patients who are being seen at various BWH outpatient practices. Interns are responsible for doing patient education, obtaining consent, and entering and maintaining patient and survey data. Interns work with multiple investigators and physicians on the Partners Biobank and collaborating studies. Principal duties may vary over time with grant funding and project demands, and with skill level of other staff assigned to projects. Responsibilities may also include administrative support of software systems like EPIC. This site is primarily research focused. This is the only internship site that will be paid.

New York

Stony Brook University Medical Hospital – Stony Brook, NY

Dr. Paula Denoya is Director of Colon and Rectal Surgery Residency and Associate Professor of Surgery at Stony Brook University Medical Hospital. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. You may have the opportunity to observe patient-physician interactions and could also be able to shadow during surgeries.

Long Island Jewish Medical Center – Queens, NY

Dr. Marc Sher is a colon/rectal surgeon and Associate Chairman of Surgery-Division of Colorectal Surgery at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. He is also the former president of the New York Surgical Society. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. Things you may observe include a variety of surgeries. Additionally, you could have the opportunity to observe the doctor-patient interactions during pre-op and post-op appointments and see new patient appointments.

Westchester Medical Center – Valhalla, NY

Dr. Roberto Bergamaschi is Chief of Colon and Rectal Surgery at Westchester Medical Center and Professor of Surgery at New York Medical College. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. You may have the opportunity to do rounds with the surgical team, observe procedures in the OR, and shadow during clinic hours.

Pennsylvania

Thomas Jefferson University Hospital – Philadelphia, PA

Dr. Gerald Isenberg is the Program Director for the Colorectal Surgery Residency and Professor of Surgery. This site will provide a clinical based shadowing experience. You may spend time in the surgical clinic where you can join Dr. Isenberg when he meets with patients and performs patient examinations. You may also have the opportunity to go into the operating room and/or shadow other partners.

California

Surgery Group of Los Angeles – Los Angeles, CA

Dr. Yosef Nasseri is a founding member of The Surgery Group of Los Angeles, a Los Angeles based physician group providing a comprehensive approach to surgical care through advanced technology, long-term patient follow-up, and direct physician access. It is the largest multi-specialty surgery group in Los Angeles. The office is attached to and affiliated with Cedars Sinai hospital (the largest hospital on the west coast) along with other regional hospitals and surgery centers. Their specialties include: General Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Plastic Surgery and Podiatry. The surgeons treat a wide array of pathology and use the most up to date technology. Students will be able to shadow surgeons and participate in care of the patients in the office, in the hospital setting and in the various operating rooms.
