New SPARK Award Program Aims to Stimulate Entrepreneurship

The Brandeis Virtual Incubator is excited to launch a brand new funding program,  SPARK Awards, to stimulate entrepreneurship on campus and help bring your ideas and entrepreneurial ambitions to life. The SPARK Program will provide pilot funding for innovative projects that will have a positive social, educational or financial impact in the area of the environment, education, computer science, healthcare, economic solutions, or social needs.

We would like to invite members of the Brandeis Community (faculty, staff and students) to submit an application

We will be awarding $50,000 to be shared among the most promising proposals.

Come get your questions answered at one of our upcoming Info Sessions: 

  • Thursday, February 26, 1:00 p.m-2:00 p.m. (IBS, Chancellor’s Suite)
  • Friday, February 27, 12:30 p.m.-1:30 p.m.  (Volen, Room 101)

Deadlines: Preliminary Proposals are due by Friday, March 6th

Please note the SPROUT Program for bench research, lab space and/or lab equipment will continue into its 5th year!

“Sprout Grants”

The Brandeis University Virtual Incubator invites members of the Brandeis Community (undergrads, grad students, postdoctoral fellows, faculty, staff) to submit an application for a “Sprout Grant”.  These grants are intended to help entrepreneurs launch their research and ideas from the lab to the market. This spring, $50,000 will be shared among the most promising proposals.

Information sessions
  • Feb 6, 2 p.m.
  • Feb 8, 10 a.m.
  • Feb 11, 2 p.m.
Deadlines for this competition:
  • Preliminary Proposal: February 15, 2013
  • Full Application: March 8, 2013
  • Judging Event: April 15, 2013

COSI High Tech Alumni Leadership Conference on Nov. 2

The Brandeis Alumni Association is hosting the first-ever Computer Science (COSI) High Tech Alumni Leadership Conference. An exciting day has been planned with entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, technical directors, lead engineers, and academics who will discuss the latest advances, trends and innovations. Adam Cheyer ’88, co-founder of Siri Inc. and director of engineering at Apple, will open the program and receive the inaugural Brandeis Computer Science Entrepreneur of the Year award. Sprout Grants Awarded to Seven Groups

Another Brandeis NOW story covers the results of the 2012 Sprout Grant competition. Of 20 applications received, half were software related, half life sciences and physical science-related, so the groups were judged separately. Thirteen groups were asked to return for a second round of interviews, coaching and presentations to outside panels of industry judges.  Seven groups were awarded grants:

2012 Sprout Grant winners, life and physical sciences:

  • 
Radiation detector, Wellenstein, PI $20,000
  • Tuberculosis treatment, therapeutic, Hedstrom, PI $17,000
  • Cold Stage for Light Microscopy, microscope tools, Turrigiano, PI $16,000
  • Conditional gene silencing, research tool, Lau PI, $6,000

2012 Sprout Grant winners, software:

  • Innermost Labs, social network. Sahar Massachi and Adam Hughes, $7,500
  • Digital Learning Analytics, learning analytics, Larusson PI  $6,000

Sprout Grant Winners 2011

Entrepreneurship is alive and well at Brandeis.

Last week, fourteen teams of Brandeis scientists presented their research to a panel of industry experts to compete for funding from the Brandeis University Virtual Incubator Sprout Grant Program.  The Virtual Incubator seeks to nurture and support entrepreneurial scientists at Brandeis by providing education, mentoring, networking and seed grants to help move their discoveries from the laboratory to the market.

Judges were impressed by the team presentations. The teams ranged from biologists who have projects that could be ready for licensing as early as next year, to computer science / IT entrepreneurship students with a web application that already has 1200 users.

“We were overwhelmed by the phenomenal proposals we received” says Irene Abrams, Associate Provost for Innovation.  “The response was incredible – with only a few weeks notice, 23 teams applied for Sprout Grants and 14 presented their proposals to the panel of judges.  I was impressed by the level of creativity among the applicants, and by the hard work the teams put into the presentations.  We only had $50,000, so we had to turn down many excellent applications, which we would have funded if we had more money.”

The 2011 winning projects are:

  • Generation Of A Rapid And Efficient Protein Knockout System, Lead Scientist:  Erin Jonasson (with Satoshi Yoshida)
  • Identification Of Molecules For Stabilizing DJ-1, A Protein Involved In Parkinson And Alzheimer Diseases. Lead Scientist: Joey Salisbury (with Brian Williams, Ala Nassar, Jeff Agar and Greg Petsko)
  • Targeting Oncogenic Ras For Protein Degradation, A Novel Approach To Therapy. Lead Scientist: Rory Coffey (with Marcus Long, Ruibao Ren, and Liz Hedstrom)
  • Identifying Pharmacological Chaperones that Promote Survival in Mouse Models of ALS, Lead Scientist: Jared Auclair (with Joey Salisbury, Dagmar Ringe, Greg Petsko, and Jeff Agar)
  • A Novel, Low Cost, Highly Sensitive Form Of Suppression PCR, Lead Scientist: Ken Sugino (with Sean O’Toole and Sacha Nelson)
  • Zen.Do, Team: Bill DeRusha, Joshua Silverman, Jason Urton (Computer Science)
