JBS Course Focuses on “Food, Lifestyle, and Health”

Elaine Lai, Senior Lecturer in Biology at Brandeis University, will be teaching a Justice Brandeis Semester (JBS) this summer titled Food, Lifestyle, and Health. The class runs from 6/1/2015 to 7/24/2015. The student receives 12 credits upon successful completion of the course. Food, Lifestyle, and Health will provide an immersive academic experience by combining academic training in the classroom with experiential learning in food labs.

JBS Offers “Bio-Inspired Design” Course

Maria de Boef Miara, Lecturer in Biology at Brandeis University, will be leading a course titled Bio-Inspired Design this summer (June 1 thru August 7, 2015). Bio-Inspired Design is part of the Justice Brandeis Semester (JBS). JBS combines courses and experiential learning to provide complete, immersive experiences so students can deeply examine a specific area of study.

Bio-Inspired Design is designed for students from a wide spectrum of disciplines, but may be particularly appealing to students in Biology, Biological Physics, Environmental Studies or HSSP areas. This is a 10-week course providing 12 credits.

Students in Bio-Inspired Design will spend the summer working with biologists, engineers and artists in a variety of settings. They will explore intriguing life forms and develop the quantitative tools needed to work at the intersection of form and function.

COSI JBS Product Showcase: Mobile Voice Applications

Mobile Voice Applications
JBS Product Showcase

Thursday 8/7/2014
2:00-3:30
Olin Sang Auditorium

Please join us at the culmination of the Summer 2014 CoSi JBS on building mobile voice applications.  Five groups will demonstrate their products described below.

B-improved will improve the quality of life on campus. With B-improved, any Brandeis student, faculty member or administrator can file an improvement and it will be recorded. With the speech feature, filing an improvement is quick and convenient. Then, facilities will review what needs fixing and take action. Members of the Brandeis community will have confidence that their voices are being heard.

Fridgebay is a website created to give students on various campuses a platform to buy and sell their items to other students on a simple, clean interface. As a part of our innovative interface, students can use our virtual speech assistant to navigate and browse our site. Our website has been created to be used on chrome browsers across all platforms using responsive web design and speech recognition native to the chrome browser.

Jeeves is a voice-powered personal assistant designed to help optimize your time by allowing you to listen to the news, email, or weather through a conversational dialogue. Jeeves is designed for “hands-busy, eyes-busy” environments. Forget about finding 20 minutes to shut yourself away to face your ever-increasing mountain of email. With Jeeves, simply listen to them on your morning commute!

The Rose Art Museum App (or RAMA) allows visitors of the Rose Art Museum an opportunity to learn more about the art and artists without disrupting the intended experience of a museum by seamlessly integrating speech commands to play audio. This ensures that the visitor is able to focus on the art!

YoWakeUp! is a social, interactive alarm clock which sends a text message to your friend when you snooze or miss an alarm. By alerting your friends, they can take action to ensure you wake up!!

Skye Fishbein ’12 Wins Fulbright

Skye Fishbein ’12 has received a Fulbright grant to perform research at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Her research project will look at interactions between TB and HIV in patients with both (“A Study of the Synergy between Mycobacterial Infections and HIV in Capetown, South Africa”) . She also plans to volunteer with the Kick TB program, which empowers children with an awareness of TB/HIV through an integration of soccer and public health awareness. She graduated with a BS/MS  in biology and a minor in mathematics.

JBS Computer Science Product Showcase 2012

The JBS Computer Science Product Showcase will take place on Thursday 8/2/2012 in the main Auditorium of the Mandel Center from 2:00-4:00

Tim Hickey and Pito Salas will present a short overview of this year’s Justice Brandeis Semester in Web Applications and Social Networks, and then each of four student groups will present the product they created this summer. There are four products that involve a database-backed web application and possibly a mobile component as well. The products are listed below, with a little suggestion of their purpose:

  • Spy Game: a new genre of Augmented Reality phone games
  • WikiWitness: an archive for first person reports of historical events
  • Volunteerhours.org: LinkedIn for volunteers
  • Where’s My Lane: civic hacking for Boston bike commuters

The JBS program covered not only the technical aspects of how to create a database backed website that could efficiently handle hundreds of millions of records, but also covered the practice of computer science and software entrepreneurship. The students will give 10-15 minute presentations with 5-10 minutes of discussion.
