Congratulations 2015 Graduates! Get Ready for Summer

The 2014-2015 academic year came to an end after the university’s 64th commencement ceremony yesterday. Over the course of their time here, many of the 2015 graduates took advantage of summer course offerings to help meet their academic goals. In recent posts we saw how a few of the new graduates including Sara Hazelnis and Adam Mandel used Brandeis University’s summer school to get ahead.

We are very proud of the accomplishments of these students and all of the students who graduated in the class of 2015! Best wishes toward a bright future!

With summer session happening soon, we hope to see new and returning students take full advantage of great opportunities available. Learn more about the unique hands on learning opportunities  and courses that meet university requirements in areas that have more limited options during the academic year like the Non-Western and Comparative Studies requirement.

Summer School helps Transfer Students Catch up with Brandeis University Requirements

Nyah Macklin comes to Brandeis from New Haven, CT to study African and African American Studies.  As a transfer student, she took advantage of summer school so she can graduate in a timely fashion. For Nyah, it came down to a choice between taking calculus or organic chemistry over the summer session last year. She chose to learn organic chemistry. Although the class is the largest in the Summer School, Nyah felt at many times like she was getting one on one attention. The class was structured and taught in a way that took advantage of the ability to focus in depth on a single subject.

During the academic year, Nyah is very active in her college community serving as undergraduate student union president. She is also heavily involved in theatre activities at Brandeis with the Undergraduate Theater Collective, Brandeis Ensemble Theater, and Company B Acapella.

This summer Brandeis welcomes a new lecturer in Organic Chemistry, Kristen Mascall, who will be teaching the following courses in Organic Chemistry that Nyah took last year:

CHEM 25a – Organic Chemistry, Lectures

Summer Session I: June 1 to July 3, 2015
Prerequisite: A satisfactory grade (C- or better) in CHEM 10b, 11b, 15b or the equivalent. The corresponding lab for this course is CHEM 29a, Sage class number: 2159. This course meets the first half of the organic chemistry, biology, premedical, and pre-dental majors when taken in conjunction with the laboratory course CHEM 29a. It is also useful for individuals in the physical and life science fields who wish to gain a working knowledge of organic chemistry. The course will examine the important classes of organic compounds of chemical, biological, and medicinal interest. Attention is focused on the relationship between structure and reactivity. Current theoretical concepts of structure, bonding, and mechanism form a basis for the interpretation of the properties and interactions as well as the synthesis and transformation of a wide range of organic compounds.

CHEM 25b – Organic Chemistry, Lectures

Summer Session II: July 6 to August 7, 2015
Prerequisite: A satisfactory grade (C- or better) in CHEM 25a or its equivalent. The corresponding lab for this course is CHEM 29b, Sage class number: 2160. As a continuation of CHEM 25a, this course meets the second half of the organic chemistry requirement for chemistry, biology, premedical, and pre-dental majors when taken in conjunction with the laboratory course, CHEM 29b.

CHEM 29a – Organic Chemistry Laboratory I

Summer Session I: June 1 to July 3, 2015
Prerequisite: A satisfactory grade (C- or better) in CHEM 18b or 19b or the equivalent. Corequisite: CHEM 25a. Dropping CHEM 25a necessitates written permission from the lab instructor to continue with the lab. May yield half-course credit toward rate of work and graduation. Two semester hour credits. The laboratory affords practical experience in the purification, isolation, and analysis of organic compounds. Various techniques include extraction, distillation, chromatography, and crystallization.

CHEM 29b – Organic Chemistry Laboratory II

Summer Session II: July 6 to August 7, 2015
Prerequisite: A satisfactory grade (C- or better) in CHEM 29a or the equivalent. Corequisite: CHEM 25b. Dropping CHEM 25b necessitates written permission from the lab instructor to continue with the lab. May yield half-course credit toward rate of work and graduation. Two semester hour credits. A continuation of CHEM 29a. This course is designed to give experience in the important techniques of organic synthesis. It includes synthesis of typical organic compounds and characterization using analytic and instrumental procedures.

Experience Organic Chemistry with Kristen Mascall this Summer

Kristen joined the Chemistry Department in August ’14 to begin her transition into the role of master teacher responsible for the undergraduate organic chemistry sequence. As a pre-health requirement, the organic chemistry lecture and labs reach near enrollment of 200 students each semester. The Summer School, which has been offering pre-health courses as the core of its offerings for forty plus years, offers an opportunity for students to complete this important requirement in an different format and as a primary focus.

kristingmascall-brandeis-organic-chemistry-summer-2015Kristen earned a PhD from Dartmouth college and specializes in the areas of chemical education, organic synthesis, and medicinal chemistry. Her journey to this point began at the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Mathematics. Although her initial post graduate plans were to become a dentist, an interest in organic chemistry was sparked after taking an upper-level undergraduate course “Organic Synthesis and Mechanisms.” “I could not shake the desire to learn more about this fascinating subject” she says.

During her graduate tenure, her love for organic chemistry grew along with a new found interest in teaching. With the support of her graduate advisor, Dr. Peter Jacobi, she finished her doctoral work and went on to join the Postdoctoral Faculty Fellow Program at Boston University, where she received further training in teaching Organic chemistry. After two years at BU, She became a member of the team of talented Chemistry faculty here at Brandeis dedicated to quality teaching and research.

Teaching at Brandeis has been a wonderful experience for Kristen and she is looking forward to working with the summer students staring June 1st.

Summer 2015 Courses taught by Kristen Mascall are:
CHEM 25a – Organic Chemistry, Lectures | Session I
CHEM 25b – Organic Chemistry, Lectures | Session II
CHEM 29a – Organic Chemistry Laboratory I | Session I
CHEM 29b – Organic Chemistry Laboratory II | Session II

Picture Yourself in a Digital Photography class this summer with Scott Patrick Wiener

Summer is a great time to get your digital camera out and improve your photography skills, learning in a small group with an acclaimed professional. Professor Scott Patrick Wiener is offering an introductory course in digital photography at Brandeis this summer that fulfills the general University requirement in Creative Arts. Students will spend time discussing form and technique before shifting into conceptual content, the moment where the students photographic ‘voices’ become most pronounced and articulate.

“The photograph is a 2-dimensional surface that references the past as an object in the present.” – Scott Wiener

scott-wiener-brandeis-summer2015-faculty-digital-photographyScott earned his BFA at the Massachusetts College of Art, and went on to earn his Masters at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago where he developed a more critical position toward the medium of photography and fell in love with teaching while working as a TA for his mentor, Claire Pentecost. He has been teaching at Brandeis for 5 years.

When Scott is not teaching he enjoys staying active in the Boston art community, and is looking forward to participating in a show at the Institute of Contemporary Art this June. His work has been profiled and reviewed in The Boston Globe, Temporary Land Bridge, Hyperallergic, Big Red & Shiny, ARTnews, TimeOut Chicago, and Paper & Carriage. Some of Scott’s work can be seen on his website.
