Junior seeking summer internship in environmental law/conservation policy

I’m a junior graduating a semester early with a B.S. in HSSP and minors in legal studies and philosophy. I studied international criminal law in The Hague last summer and spent my childhood living as an expat in Shanghai among other overseas experiences, which have made multinational communities feel accessible and endlessly inspiring.

Through independent studies and extracurricular pursuits I’ve developed a keen interest in environmental work and in particular, environmental law. This summer job or internship would be my first exposure to work in the environmental sector, so I’d like to work for a smaller-sized organization that would allow me more freedom to expand the breadth of my understanding of how conservation policy works. I can’t wait to channel my collaborative spirit and dedication to seeing things through into the people, projects, and mission I support this summer and beyond.

I’d appreciate your career advice or to hear about your own career journey.

Sophomore seeking advice for career in conservation biology

I’m a sophomore at Brandeis studying Biology with minors in Environmental Studies and English. I have an interest going into conservation biology, however many of the opportunities available to get hands on experience in this field requires a large fee. I’m wondering how I can manage to get some experience in this field without going broke in the meantime. Any wisdom regarding graduate school programs would also be deeply appreciated.

Advocate interested in public outreach work

I am a junior majoring in Environmental Studies and Hispanic Studies. I am interested in public outreach work relating to issues of environmental safety, particularly in how it relates to minority and low-income groups who are generally affected the most. I have experience working in a position at WATCH CDC advocating for housing justice in Waltham, where I meet with clients to help find solutions to their housing, food access and economic issues they faced. I really valued the personal connections I made there, and I am looking for advice on types of jobs that will get me experience on the ground with these kinds of issues so that I can fully understand them and find my next steps.

Upcoming graduate interested in non-profit work

I am a senior who has a real passion and zest for the environmental field. As I have started looking for jobs after graduation in the spring, I have come across a lot of positions that both require a science-based degree and significant amount of experience. So far, I have found myself considerably overwhelmed with these job listings since I seriously lack credentials. I am most interested in education, advocacy, “some” research, and definitely hands-on work. I just finished an internship involving wildlife care, although I do not see myself doing that in the future. I want to know what it is like to work for non-profit environmental groups. I would love to hear more about the pros and cons of working for climate change-based groups like Audubon, Sierra Club, WWF, etc.

I am a current senior at Brandeis graduating with a B.A. in Biology and Philosophy. I am fascinated by the natural world and want to figure it out, both metaphysically and scientifically. My interest in these subjects was piqued when I took the class Philosophy of Science with Professor Marusic. Next year, I hope to be teaching biology in Sierra Leone as a Peace Corps volunteer—and become a Philosopher King in the process. Afterwards, I hope to attend graduate school for geology or evolutionary biology through the Peace Corps Coverdell Program. Archived Ad: Seeking Environmental Career Advice

I am graduating in 2017 with a B.S./ M.S. in biochemistry and minors in classics and chemistry. I perform biochemistry/ biophysics research in the Professor Dorothee Kern’s lab. I discovered my interest in an environmental career recently, after taking an introductory environmental chemistry course. Besides the class, I have no experience with environmental studies, and I don’t know anything about the environmental job sector. What jobs are available in this area for scientists with a background in biochemistry or chemistry? Although I find green chemistry and waste/drinking water treatment particularly engaging, I am open to all environmental careers. I would be grateful for advice and insights about your experience!

Archived Ad: Seeking Science Policy/Communications Career Insight

Hello, my name is Rebecca Miller and I’m looking to explore careers relating to science policy/ communications. I have volunteered with environmental groups and have some experience lobbying for a health education initiative. I really enjoy learning about various scientific concepts and then using that knowledge to determine logical solutions to societal problems. I have considered looking into bioethics/ public policy Masters programs post-Brandeis, but was wondering if there might be alumni who have similar interests and might be willing to clue me into the types of career paths available or give advice on what might be the most useful educational or work experiences. I am unsure of whether it is more logical to focus on the sciences or on the legal/ethical aspects of policy as an undergrad, and would also love to hear about the paths others have taken. Thank you so much for your help!

Archived Ad: Seeking Food Justice Policy Experience

I am a senior on track to graduate in May. I’m seeking advice for my job search. I am interested in food access and food production. I would love to speak to someone who works in food justice on the policy level or in a think tank. I would like a job that teaches me new skills such as research or a job that hones my grant writing skills.

I’ve worked on a farm doing field work as well as coordinating a low-income market. I also conducted a price-value analysis of the CSA model of the farm that I worked at v. other local, organic vendors. Additionally, I have some experience in grant writing.

I’m writing this because I am struggling to find a job that is both in my field of interest and that I am qualified for. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Archived Ad: Health Major Looking to Enter Field of Journalism

My name is Madeline Rosenberg and I am a senior graduating in May 2016 studying Health: Science, Society and Policy and Environmental Studies. I have strong passions for public health, environmental studies, sociological phenomenon, and art, and have channeled these interests into social science research, writing, and reading.

My academic and work experiences are varied: I have had the opportunity to be a member of the Environmental Health and Justice JBS; a research assistant for a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism; a research intern for a documentary series with Warrior Poets; a research assistant for a scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center; and a thesis candidate with the HSSP department focused on the relationship between tattoos, college age women, and health.

After reflecting on these experiences, I am gripped by and subsequently hoping to pursue work in the fields of journalism (written, broadcast, documentary), film/TV, and publishing.
For someone whose formal academic areas of study are different from these specific career paths, what should my next steps be? How do I catch up on knowledge of these fields that I would have studied in a classroom setting? Where should I be looking for jobs? How should I go about becoming a more competitive candidate to production companies, journalistic and news companies and organizations, and publishing firms?
Any advice regarding these fields or questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance for your time!
