Prospective marketer seeks industry advice

I am a junior double majoring in International and Global Studies and Sociology, with a minor in Hispanic Studies, and pursuing a career in marketing, communications, and public relations. I would like advice on how to successfully break into the private sector as someone with more public sector (non-profits, charity) experience. Specifically, what is the best way to gain skills and expertise in marketing and communications without having formally studied business? Last summer, I started my transition from the public to private industry by working as a content marketing specialist for the Brandeis Graduate Professional Studies program. I would like to continue learning more about the industry and welcome any advice from alumni.

I am a recent Brandeis graduate who’s been looking for a job in the communications field (since I’ve had great experiences working in corporate communications during my internships) for a couple of months now.

I was wondering if there were any communication professionals out there that had any advice or could help guide me down the path of landing jobs in the communication field (brand, corporate, marketing, PR, etc.) especially for a recent graduate like myself. It’s been difficult trying to figure out what jobs are meant to be out of your reach or if there are credentials I need to develop first to be considered.

Archived Ad: Looking for Informational Interviews in Fashion and PR

I just finished my last semester at Brandeis and want to work in fashion, ideally, with a fashion magazine or a PR firm with an emphasis on luxury.

I have previously interned with Oscar de la Renta and Vogue India as a sales and marketing intern, respectively. In addition, while at Brandeis, I was one of the recipients of the 2014 YMA Fashion Fund Scholarship award.

I’m just beginning my job search and would love to conduct some informational interviews and glean any wisdom from alumns. I’d love any advice or guidance from alumns who have worked in the industry or know of someone who has. In addition, any kind words of support and encouragement while undertaking the daunting task of applying to jobs would be much appreciated! Thank you!

I am a senior graduating in May, majoring in Business and American Studies and minoring in Journalism. I am looking for entry-level positions in public relations, preferably in the Boston area. I am particularly interested in creative public relations and the media industry. I have interned at a public relations firm in New Jersey for two summers, and interned at Hot Press, a music magazine in Dublin, Ireland last spring while I studied abroad there. At Brandeis, I have been actively involved with The Justice, and have worked for the Women’s Studies Research Center as a research assistant, as well as with the English Language Programs office as a mentor and English tutor. For my American Studies honors thesis, I am researching and writing about animation during World War II. As you can see, I have varied interests and experience and am trying to find a good fit for me for after graduation. I have started the process of job searching, but I want to make sure that I am looking at all possible opportunities. If you have any career advice or public relations connections in Boston, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to talk to you. Thank you for your consideration.

Hello! I recently graduated with my master’s degree in Broadcast and Digital Journalism from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University after receiving my bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University in 2013. While my background includes television reporting and media production, I am also exploring public relations/media positions. I am looking to utilize my writing and storytelling skills and apply them to a more creative platform. I wanted to see if any alumni had any suggestions for me in my job search or any advice for an aspiring communications professional. Thank you for your help!

I graduated in May with a BA in Psychology. I always loved working with kids so as I began the Psychology track I thought I would one day be a school psychologist. After years of schooling myself I decided I needed to take a break and join the workforce. I am looking for a job in PR, marketing, communications, or development preferably in a Jewish nonprofit setting but I have opened my options to corporations also. I would appreciate any advice, leads or connections you might have.

I’m incredibly interested in the public relations field and would love to meet/speak with alumni who have their own PR firms or occupy senior level positions in other firms. I’m specifically interested in corporate communications, government relations and folks working in PR in the entertainment space. In terms of the experience I already have, I established my own nonprofit organization last year called Voices of Conservative Youth that is dedicated to changing the way young people perceive the Republican Party. I’ve done my own PR for the group and have been able to garner a significant amount of media placement in the process. I’m looking for mentorship in the PR field and would love it if you’d connect me with someone who’s willing to provide it. Thanks in advance for the consideration and I’m very much looking forward to hearing from you.
