Class of ’17 alum weighing nursing or DO after MSN-RN degree.

I am a Brandeis Alum (2017) currently pursuing an MSN-RN at Columbia University. I am going to graduate in August and would love to work in the Boston area, preferably in a pediatric, OB, or psychiatric setting. I am planning on pursuing a medical or NP degree after working for a couple years, and would love to gain more experience in a supportive, fast-paced, diverse work environment that will help me become the best health provider possible, and that will invest in my potential. I am very torn between nursing and medicine, and also am unsure of what specialty I would like to pursue (thinking of peds transplant, cardiology, endocrine, or OB/GYN). My program provides very little support and resources, and I would love to speak to a Brandeis grad/connection who can give me a well-rounded and unbiased view of medicine, if it’s worth it with healthcare today to pursue medicine (note: I am interested in DO), and if being an NP is basically on-par with a physician. Thank you!

Seeking advice on research positions in public health & health policy

I am graduating this coming May with majors in Political Science and International and Global Studies. During my time at Brandeis and through internships that I participated in, I became very interested in health policy and public health research, taking multiple courses in this area to further my academic knowledge. I have been applying to various research positions within these fields, for example at Dartmouth College, MGH, Boston Childrens, RTI and others. I was wondering if you have any advice for a young professional who is seeking to enter the health policy and public health field. I would also like to hear about your experience within this field, how you got started, what your job search process looked like and your experience so far.

Archived Ad: Health Major Looking to Enter Field of Journalism

My name is Madeline Rosenberg and I am a senior graduating in May 2016 studying Health: Science, Society and Policy and Environmental Studies. I have strong passions for public health, environmental studies, sociological phenomenon, and art, and have channeled these interests into social science research, writing, and reading.

My academic and work experiences are varied: I have had the opportunity to be a member of the Environmental Health and Justice JBS; a research assistant for a senior fellow at the Schuster Institute for Investigative Journalism; a research intern for a documentary series with Warrior Poets; a research assistant for a scholar at the Women’s Studies Research Center; and a thesis candidate with the HSSP department focused on the relationship between tattoos, college age women, and health.

After reflecting on these experiences, I am gripped by and subsequently hoping to pursue work in the fields of journalism (written, broadcast, documentary), film/TV, and publishing.
For someone whose formal academic areas of study are different from these specific career paths, what should my next steps be? How do I catch up on knowledge of these fields that I would have studied in a classroom setting? Where should I be looking for jobs? How should I go about becoming a more competitive candidate to production companies, journalistic and news companies and organizations, and publishing firms?
Any advice regarding these fields or questions is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much in advance for your time!

Archived Ad: Psychology Major Seeks Neuroscience Research Advice

I am a recent Brandeis alumna who is having difficulty finding work in research. Though as a pre-med student I have a strong science background, I majored in psychology (with a minor in computer science) rather than neuroscience (which I find far more satisfying and engaging). I am now looking to gain practical experience participating in neuroscience (or related biology) research before applying to graduate programs to gain a better understanding of the realities of a career as a researcher as well as to improve my scientific foundation and expand my research skill repertoire. I have found my major to be quite limiting–though I do have science coursework, I have struggled to find research positions because my major disqualifies me from the majority of lab positions I have come across and I worry I will not be able to get the experience I need to prepare me for graduate studies. I would love to be contacted by someone who can give me advice on how I can, having majored in psychology, reposition myself for a scientific career and make this transition– it would be extremely useful to speak to someone who has made this jump. I would especially love to be contacted by someone who can connect me with a potential employer or even an internship.

Archived Ad: Wisdom from the Art World

I am a Studio Art (painter) major graduating this May. I am also the Marketing and Communications intern at Hiatt Career Center, President of the Student Committee for the Rose Art Museum, and a Roosevelt Fellow (peer academic advisor for first year students). I would love to hear from alums and parents who also have BAs in Fine Arts and have pursued careers in visual arts, museums, galleries, arts non-profits and higher education. What kinds of paths did you take to get to where you are today? What cities are best for young artists? As a person dedicated to making art, how did/do you manage to earn a living while making your art? For those who did not go down a studio route, how did you get involved in the museum or gallery world? What kinds of opportunities exist in the marketing and communications fields for the art world?
